A breast reduction, also known as a mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure which can serve various purposes for individuals suffering from side effects brought on by large breasts. First, the reduction mammoplasty can help give women a more proportionate breast size that properly suits their body frame.
Similar to women with small breast which crave a fuller breast appearance, women suffering from abnormally large breast desire a natural looking bust. Furthermore, a breast reduction can help restore breasts that have experienced volume loss brought on by pregnancy, weight gain, or aging.
Although a reduction mammoplasty is often done to increase the attractiveness of abnormally large breasts, it can also serve to alleviate women from neck, chest, and back pain. Unlike most elective cosmetic procedures, a breast reduction may be covered by medical insurance due to the physical and emotional side effects brought on by heavy breast.
Breast Reduction is not limited to the female population. Oftentimes, men experience an excess amount of breast tissue in their pectoral area as well. This can be caused by a variety of reasons such as hormonal imbalances or sedentary lifestyle; however, this issue can be addressed through a gynecomastia procedure (male breast reduction).

If individuals are experiencing the side effects of heavy breasts such as sagging or back pain, they may be a candidate for this procedure.
Unlike most cosmetic procedures, most can visually note or understand that the breast reduction is necessary to alleviate their discomfort. The breast reduction works to not only improve breast anatomy, but also correct drastic and exaggerated breast development.
This ASPS states,
“Overly large breasts can cause health and emotional problems. In addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort. The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts can be as important an issue as the physical discomfort and pain. Breast reduction is a good option for you if you are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, don't smoke, are bothered by feeling that your breasts are too large, have breasts that limit your physical activity, experience back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts, have shoulder indentations from bra straps, and/or have skin irritation beneath the breast crease”.
Breast reduction Miami is performed through a variety of different techniques and incision methods. Most breast surgeons have mastered a specific method, but some individuals may benefit more from a specific technique due to their situation and ideal result.
At the moment you decide you are ready to evaluate your reduction mammoplasty options, schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to evaluate which method would be ideal for you.
The General Steps for the Reduction Mammoplasty include:
A reduction mammoplasty surgery is considered a major cosmetic procedure due to the incisions and extraction of skin tissue. Therefore, this surgery must be performed under general anesthesia to ensure comfort and painless procedure.
While receiving general anesthesia, the patient is intubated by way of a certified anesthesiologist who inserts a breathing tube through your throat. Throughout the procedure, the anesthesiologist will administer intravenous medication to ensure you stay sedated throughout the procedure.
At first you will feel at ease and calmed at the intravenous medication begins. After you are relaxed, the general anesthesia will be administered. This is the moment in which you will not remember feeling or consciousness throughout the procedure. Your blood pressure and pulse will remained at a low level and monitored during the entire process.
Rest assured that Adore Plastic Surgery provides the highest trained anesthesiologists in the South Florida Area. Our anesthesiologist team constantly overlooks the patient’s vital functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and rate of breathing at the time of the procedure.
The breast surgeon creates either a circular incision around the areola or an anchor style incision around the breast and nipple. Once the incision is made, it is pulled upward so that the doctor can work on reducing the breast tissue. During this process, the nipple remains intact with its nerve and blood supply in order to avoid loss of nipple sensitivity.
The incision are then sutured to bring together the reduced breast size. By laying the sutures, the breast surgeons are able to create new support for the newly formed breasts. Although the scarring is permanent, through the use of specific gels, the patient can lessen their appearance.
In selecting an ideal reduction mammoplasty procedure for your situation, note that the techniques vary by the incision method. These incisions include the lollipop, the anchor, the crescent incision and the circumareolar (Benelli) method.
The lollipop method is tailored to women suffering specifically from large, hanging, or sagging breasts. This technique is named “lollipop” because of the incision made around the areola (nipple) leading down the lower center of the breasts. The lollipop incision allows plastic surgeons the ability to provide tightening and reduction techniques.
The anchor method is ideal for individuals with a longer distance from the crease of the breasts to the nipple. Also, this incision technique is best for those who suffer from a significant “droop” appearance in the breasts.
The incision is done similarly to the lollipop but continues along the lower sides of the breasts. Although this method is considered to be the most invasive, the anchor incision allows for the surgeon to work with most breast surface area, providing the best results.
The crescent method is tailored to women who have usual sitting breasts but are specifically suffering from downward facing nipples. The crescent breast is performed by creating an incision on the northern end of the areola in the shape of a crescent moon. This allows the surgeon to remove excess skin between the breast and nipple, which causes the downward appearance.
This method, often known as the Benelli incision, is performed on women who will benefit from a mild breast reduction as opposed to a more invasive option. The technique works by executing an incision throughout the entire circumference of the areola. The reduction mammoplasty surgeon then crafts the desired breast appearance by removing the excess skin around the nipple. The nipples are then stitched back into the breasts leaving them in a natural yet reduced state.
If women are experiencing sagging breast in combination with excessive volume brought on by pregnancy, weight loss, or age related factors, they may decide to undergo a breast lift and reduction at the same time. A highly trained surgeon can bring up the breast tissue all while decreasing its size for a more natural appearance.
If women have extremely asymmetrical breast or wish to plump their breast appearance in which a way breast tissue cannot supply, a reduction and implant procedure may be helpful. Reduction with implants for breast is ideal for those women who have experienced loss of skin elasticity and/or stretchmark around their breast. Many women opt to have a reduction, lift, and implant place in there breast for the best results!
